Popcorn/Hardcut limiter Mercedes-Benz C250 DELPHI CRD3

One of our customers asked if we could create a popcorn/hardcut limiter solution for his customer’s C250 equipped with a Delphi CRD3.

After some revisions, we ended up with a working popcorn/hardcut limiter solution for the CRD3 platform.  However, this customer didn’t share a video with us regarding the popcorn/hardcut limiter.

If we do receive a video for this particular solution we will update this post with the provided video.

Hardcut or popcorn limiter is nothing more than disabling and reinserting certain fuel amounts for the desired rpm, this is done usually on very high rpm to avoid issues. Like we have pop and bang / burbles for petrol-based engines we have popcorn/hardcut limiter for diesel engines. However, the popcorn/hardcut limiter sound that is produced on diesel engines is very different from that on the petrol-based engine. The reason for this is that diesel fuel can’t be ignited in the exhaust by itself, we need to cut and reinsert fuel back, this is done very fast and thus creates a kind of popcorn sound from the exhaust.

Stage 2 Pop & Bang Sportmode Catalyst off Big GainsBMW X6 M 4.4 MEVD17.2.H

The N63 is BMW’s well-known twin-turbocharged V8 4.4l petrol engine. This engine model has been in production from 2008 to the present. A key aspect of this engine is that the turbochargers are located ‘inside’ the engine’s V structure also called a “hot-vee” layout. As some of you already may know the N63 replaced BMW’s N62 natural aspirated engine. The N63 is truly an engine that can push boundaries a lot further and due to its supercharged nature, it can therefore deliver astonishing power.

The S63 is also a twin-turbocharged V8 4.4l petrol engine based on the same base design as the N63 engine. This S63 engine can be found in the highest model range from BMW and it’s being exclusively used by the M models, such as the X5 M, X6 M, M5, M6, and M8.

The continued development of the S63 shows us that BMW still cares for its high-end customers who want to have the best possible power results without sacrificing the quality and safety of this engine.

However, like every manufacturer, BMW is also bound to government and environmental restrictions. Therefore, even if BMW’s high-end engine models are aimed solely at power, they still need to be somehow in alignment with government and environmental standards.

Usually, BMW engines can deliver huge power increases with just a simple ECU tune. Because of this tuners really love to tweak these BMW engines. It’s by far one of the most popular platforms out there for engine tuners.

One of our customers came to us to stage 2 tune a S63 engine, to be precisely the S63B44T2. Furthermore, this customer also wanted pop and bangs mostly in sport mode.

OutputKW = 422.9

After a couple of revisions, we ended up with huge power gains and working pop and bang solution in sport mode.

*Interesting find, after our customer replaced coils and sparkplugs the car started to continuously pop and bang (see video) from max RPM to 4000RPM. Also, due to this replacement no more misfiring occurred and the car feels stronger. The customer also added an octane booster to the tank to allow the car to take advantage of the full ignition advance for higher power (torque).

Coasting mode disabledVAG MG1CS011 1.5TSI

Coasting mode (in German freilauf) is a technology being used by the VAG group which is mostly available in their TSI BlueMotion models equiped with a DQ200 DSG. These models are more focussed on fuel economy. This new technology mimics the driver hybrid-style characteristics: lift off the throttle, and the car can coast with the engine completely deactivated. Compared to the previous system this new coasting mode reduces fuel consumption by up to 0.4 litres/100km.

What coasting mode does it disengage the engine from the gearbox, and shuts off the engine completely. This system is seamless and it goes automatically into coast mode whenever you lift your foot off the throttle pedal, most of the time you will not even know you are in coasting mode.

There are certain criteria for using this technology.

For example, the car must:

1. be in efficiency mode in drive select;

2. be in position D (gear lever);

3. be speeding between 20 km/h and 160 km/h on a slight uphill or downhill gradient and foot off the accelerator pedal

These days many manufacturers of cars are solely focused on efficiency, fuel economy, and meeting government emissions norms. In the future, we will experience more and more such technologies which will try to help to achieve these goals.

However, real-world experiences do teach us that not everyone is enthusiastic about these implementations. There are VAG users who absolutely don’t like this feature at all.
At the moment, we are not aware of any possibilities to turn this feature off in the car’s infotainment system.  The only way to permanently disable this function is to alter the software inside the ECU. This way you can have it turned off completely.

Good news, if you have customers at your shop who wants to turn this off in their cars, we at chiptuners have a working solution for this.

2 Bar Boost Stage 3 BMW MG1CS003 B48 320I

BMW’s B48 comes with a 2.0L inline 4-cylinder engine. This engine is quite new compared to the N20 engine. However, the B48 comes with different power output versions, like the 20i, 25i, and 30i. Furthermore, there’s a 35i (found in the m235i) available which gives the maximum power for this platform.

The B engine platform from BMW is designed to be modular. This means that BMW aims to reduce costs by sharing parts and design structures between the variety of engine models.
For example, the B58 (inline 6-cylinder petrol engine) shares the same engine materials & housing as the diesel inline 6-cylinder (B57). A huge build-up of compression in diesel engines is needed to ignite the air/fuel mixture, whereas on petrol engines a sparkplug is used to ignite the air/fuel mixture.

The B platform engines come with the new BOSCH MG1 (petrol) MD1 (diesel) ECUs.

One of our customers asked us to work on a stage 3 project. Details about the car you can find below:

VehicleProducer = BMW
VehicleSeries = 3-series
VehicleBuild = 320i
VehicleModel = B48
VehicleModelyear = 2019
Userdef1 = Autotuner
Userdef2 = obd_virtual

EcuProducer = Bosch
EcuBuild = MG1CS003
EngineType = Turbo-Petrol
EngineDisplacement = 2.0
EngineTransmission = ZF8HP
OutputPS = 184.0
OutputKW = 135.3

The car came to us with:

1. Engine rebuild forged CP pistons an forged rods
2.Pureboost Big Turbo
3.Big intake cooler
4.High flow intake
5.Snow performance Meth kit
6.Full racing exhaust

The gearbox was already tuned. Keep in mind it is most of the time needed to adjust the software inside the gearbox. The torque limits are very important in the gearbox.
By increasing the torque limits the TCU and ECU can calculate for example the correct clutch clamp pressure.

After several test files we ended up with 2 bar boost, see log below. However, there was a knock registration at 5471 rpm, due to using lower-quality octane fuel for this particular file.

https://www.autotuner-tool.com/en/log/6a9b70bdf5f01f04040a3120d184a8554bf27c26ef161c2ac8e66a569c1bdee3

Due to the limitation of quality octane fuel we ended up with a version(we adjusted the timing) which produced a little bit less boost without any knock registration during our logging session.

Our customer did not dyno the files we provided him, when we have a dyno graph we will update this post.

Skoda Superb 2.0 TSI SIMOS18 Overboost & Torque monitoring deactivation

Skoda Superb 2.0 TSI SIMOS18 Overboost & Torque monitoring deactivation

When upgrading to stage 3 (bigger turbo setup) sometimes overboost conditions can cause issues, like car going into limp mode or throttle closing. We can disable this overboost for stage 3 projects for customers who demand high power. Also we can disable torque monitoring so that the ECU won’t limit based on torque and pedal value.
